"The Writing Revolution" (The Atlantic, Oct. 2012) was a finalist for a National Magazine award and won 1st Prize for Feature Writing from the Education Writers Association.

The article, about the importance of explicit writing instruction, sparked the creation of a non-profit by the same name, The Writing Revolution, which is currently helping teachers provide better writing instruction in low income schools in New York City and Washington DC.

Currently, she is researching a book about the literacy gap—studying why so many children leave school unable to comprehend complex reading material, express complex thoughts in language or write about their ideas.
